E62: Finding Healing + Vision with The Kaleidoscope Kid

On this special season of the Virtual Campfire, we’re sharing the stories from our community members who have completed our 12-week intensive, Blaze Your Own Trail to Self-Love (BYOT). While this week’s guest hasn’t been through the program, his journey of healing in nature with the support of psychedelics must be told. In short, psychedelics saved his life and inspired him to live out the rest of his days in the pursuit of creating music every single day. While I would much prefer that he didn’t endure the difficult circumstances he has, how lucky are we that his life took the turn it did and now we get to be inspired by his visions and the music he’s making?

Week Six of this season of the Virtual Campfire podcast aligns to week six of Blaze Your Own Trail to Self-Love, in which we take the goals we set in week five and create a vision board that represents the impact we want to make, how we want to feel in pursuit of the goals, and the experiences we want to have in this life, in this planet, in these bodies. This is more than handbags, mansions, and fast cars - this is a vision board with soul, purpose, and intention - and a visual reminder of our deepest desires.

about our guest

The Kaleidoscope Kid was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease which sent him on a healing journey with his dog Blue, with one goal: to find reprieve from his tremendous physical pain, but what he discovered was so much more. With only his guitar and dog he cataloged his tale that not only cured his physical pain but also fed his soul on his debut album, The Kaleidoscope Kid.

The Kaleidoscope Kid is a Phoenix, Arizona native that grew up on skateboarding, visual art, and outdoor escapism. The diversity of his activities and surroundings translated into a varied love for music, bringing about a sonic landscape in his work that echoes his passions and interests.

Although a true newcomer to the music scene, Kaleidoscope’s discography leaps and bounds between spaces, leaning on his charisma to bring the listener along for the ride. A fan of an extensive catalog of inspirations that span from Beck, Pink Floyd, to Bob Marley and Sublime— his work is a reflection of intentionality and passion for the craft. Taking pieces of his life and translating them into his sound has helped Kaleidoscope create an ethereal world that’s equal parts relatable and entrancing.

Kaleidoscope’s voice is sure to resonate with many and inspire a new trajectory of music-making that breaks the customary rules of genre. Thankfully, as we all know, there are some rules that are begging to be broken.

Kaleidoscope signed to indie powerhouse label Suburban Noize Records to create his debut album, developing and fine-tuning his musicianship for his broadened audience. This positive new chapter in his career brings Kaleidoscope into the deeper pools of the music scene, which is sure to expand his discography as well as his fan base.

His first single under his new label deal with Suburban Noize was “Hold Up”, which continues to gain momentum with his edgy vocals and idiosyncratic flows. The song now has surpassed one million streams on Spotify, as more and more fans are converted by The Kaleidoscope Kid’s genre-blending artistry. The music video for the song plays like a cinematic homage to Breaking Bad, with the singer wrestling with a bad trip and burying himself — or his former self — in a shallow desert grave.

In this episode:

  • Who is the Kaleidoscope Kid?

  • How has he found healing in nature?

  • How has that healing informed and influenced his music?

  • How did psychedelics help him on his journey?

  • What would he do with his magic wand?
