Wellness in the Wilderness: Joshua Tree National Park is a 3-day, 2-night creative retreat in Joshua Tree National Park designed to help you slow down, reconnect, and see the world—and yourself—with new eyes. Through mindful movement, reflective workshops, and night sky photography, you’ll explore the theme of presence, memory, and meaning under some of the darkest skies in California. Whether you’re seeking a deeper relationship with yourself or the stars—or both—this retreat offers a supportive space to reconnect, reflect, and create.
If you’re a Hiking My Feelings/Wellness in the Wilderness program alumni, or are curious about the healing power of nature, you’ll love the addition of the astrophotography workshops to help you capture the magic of the night sky. If you’re an astrophotographer looking to capture the Milky Way and star trails in Joshua Tree National Park, we’re excited to help you slow down and consider photography as a mindfulness practice. We welcome participants of all experience levels and backgrounds. Come as you are, with your story, your curiosity, and your light.
This event is a collaboration between Sydney and Barry Williams of Hiking My Feelings/Wellness in the Wilderness and Jon Norris of Jon Norris Photography and the first of our new event series (formerly Hike + Heal). We are excited to help you connect the dots between inner and outer space under a bazillion stars, keep reading to learn more!
Inner Space
For hikers, feelers, reflectors, and seekers in the Hiking My Feelings community and beyond
You’re drawn to nature not just for the views, but for what it reveals inside of you. You’re ready to slow down, step away from the noise, and remember what it feels like to be fully present—with your breath, your body, and the world around you.
This retreat will offer:
Meandering walks that move at the pace of presence (no hiker left behind)
Reflective workshops and journaling prompts to help you connect the dots between the wilderness within and the landscape around you
Community conversations that honor your lived experience without asking you to fix or perform
A quiet place to process, restore, and reconnect with your own inner rhythm
Outer Space
For photographers—curious beginners, seasoned stargazers, and everyone in between
You’re captivated by the stars and want to capture what they make you feel. You’re not just looking for a good shot—you’re looking for a deeper connection to the process and the place. This retreat offers hands-on, accessible instruction in astrophotography led by renowned night sky photographer Jon Norris—with a focus on intention, creativity, and presence.
You’ll receive:
Step-by-step support for photographing the Milky Way, star trails, and desert landscapes
A welcoming environment for all experience levels—DSLR and phone photographers alike
Opportunities to learn new technical skills and reflect on why this practice matters to you
Space to slow down and frame the shot with your whole self—not just your settings

sometimes ya just gotta scream into the void
Event Pillars
Astrophotography
Photography becomes a practice in presence when we slow down enough to truly see. Through guided instruction and immersive stargazing experiences, astrophotography invites us to witness the night sky not only with our cameras, but with our hearts as well. With renowned landscape photographer and educator Jon Norris as our guide, we’ll learn how to capture the stars with intention—transforming awe into artistry and taking home images that reflect both the landscape and our place within it.
Mindful Movement
In the stillness of the desert, every step becomes a conversation with the land. On this retreat, movement is slow, intentional, and deeply attuned to your surroundings. From gentle hikes through open desert to quiet walks beneath the stars, we’ll move at the pace of presence—allowing your body to guide you back to yourself. Whether you’re stretching at sunrise or returning from a night shoot in silence, each moment of movement invites you into deeper connection with the wild within and around you.
Self-Discovery
Under the vast sky of Joshua Tree, the boundaries between inner and outer wilderness begin to soften. With Stillness Under Stars as our guiding theme, this retreat offers space to reflect on what you’re ready to release, remember, or reimagine. Through journaling, story-sharing, and creative prompts inspired by the landscape, you’ll have the opportunity to explore what you’re carrying—and what’s ready to shift. The sky will offer perspective. The land will offer grounding. You’ll carry both home with you.

Why Joshua Tree?
Because this desert doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. It’s raw and real, harsh and gentle. It’s the kind of place that strips you down in the best way, so you can remember what’s underneath all the noise.
By day, the wide-open horizon invites you to breathe deeper, move slower, and reconnect with what you’ve been too busy to notice. By night, the sky stretches above you like a story still being written. Under this new moon, the Milky Way will light up the darkness like a trail of breadcrumbs—guiding you back to wonder.

While our healing journeys are deeply personal and unique to our lived experiences, we all have at least one thing in common: we’ve survived everything life has dealt our way so far. Healing in community reminds us that we are never alone in what we’ve experienced—and that together, we rise.
During this retreat, you’ll be invited to:
Participate in fireside storytelling circles that foster deep listening and shared understanding
Practice reflective journaling and gentle sharing to connect your personal experience with the greater themes of the weekend
Learn how to hold space for others and be held in return—without needing to fix or perform
Explore creative expression as a tool for connection—through words, images, and presence
Build meaningful relationships with fellow participants rooted in curiosity, compassion, and shared wonder
Community doesn’t mean losing yourself—it means being reminded of who you are, and that you never have to walk this path alone.
-
When it’s all said and done, and you’ve emptied the last of the desert sand out of your boots, what’s next?
Each of our events includes a Google Drive folder chock-full of photos from the event, a gorgeous workbook modeled after Sydney’s book Hiking Your Feelings: Blazing a Trail to Self-Love - created with intention to help you reflect and integrate your experiences from the weekend, and a recap video you can watch any time you need a reminder of the stillness we found together under the stars. -
On Saturday, we’re excited to share meals from Good to Go for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!
You’ll want to bring your own food for dinner on Friday and breakfast on Sunday.

Her work bridges personal healing and environmental stewardship, helping people reconnect with themselves and the land.
Through her firm, Wellness in the Wilderness Consulting, Sydney partners with public land agencies, nonprofits, and mission-driven organizations to design nature-based wellness programs that promote community health, staff well-being, and sustainable stewardship. Barry Williams went from high-rises to high altitudes—trading a tech career on Manhattan’s Upper East Side for a trailer in the backwoods of Maine after a single skydiving experience changed the trajectory of his life. Within 18 months of that first jump, he left the world of Fortune 100 clients behind to pursue instructor ratings in the skydiving industry, eventually building a 16-year career as a professional skydiver and mentor.
Originally from New Hampshire, Barry grew up hiking and backpacking in the White Mountains, where he also earned his Wilderness EMT certification. Today, he brings that same sense of adventure, adaptability, and calm under pressure to his work in our programs and retreats.
“What does Barry do around here?”
In short, everything that keeps the train on the tracks. Barry is the behind-the-scenes engine and on-the-ground support—co-leading hikes, facilitating retreats, producing video content, and ensuring participants feel safe, seen, and supported in the outdoors.
Inspired by the teachings of Bruce Lee, Alan Watts, and Jiddu Krishnamurti, Barry lives by the mantra “be like water.” Whether he’s cooking a soulful meal, dropping “Barryisms” that will blow your mind, or telling UFO stories around the campfire, Barry shows up with presence and purpose - and invites others to do the same.
-
Jon Norris is a dark sky photographer, educator, and visual storyteller whose work captures the quiet awe of the cosmos. A former aerospace engineer, Jon brings a unique blend of technical precision and creative soul to his photography—inviting others to see the night sky not just as scenery, but as an experience. Through his workshops and art, he helps people reconnect to the rhythms of nature and the wonder of stillness, one starry exposure at a time. Jon is a member of Dark Sky International and a passionate advocate for protecting the night.
